Human Geo 9/26 - Situation Notes

- Situation is a valuable way to indicate location for two reasons:

  • Situation helps us to find an unfamiliar place by comparing it's location with a familiar one.
  • Situation helps us understand the importance of a location. For example, some places are important because they are accessible to other places due to their location. 
Today in class we discussed why Chicago became so populous and why America would rather buy things from China and not produce them here. Chicago became popular because European sellers would come through the great lakes, entering through the St. Lawrence. They could get to Chicago and barely have to land travel to sell their stuff. A lot of people would stop at places on the east coast where it was easy to get to and sell, but the items they sell are already being sold by a bunch of other people. The United States buys their stuff from China because the costs are cheaper there. There is a ton of factory workers that get paid terribly. About 300$ a month. This means the company doesn't have to pay a ton for the workers and they don't cover medical insurance. They sell the stuff to us cheaper and we sell it for more. Living in China sounds like it sucks.

Western Civ 4/1 - Greek Theater

There were tragedies - a play where something tragic happens. There were comedies - a play where they usually made fun of common ideas (politics). The only movie I can think of that I recently watched is The Conjuring. I think this movie would be leaning more towards tragedy. The hero of the story would be the mother, who then is too focused on her children instead of herself and gets possessed by a spirit. It wasn't that she was full of pride she was just trying to care for her children. After the possession scene, however, she tries to tell one of the "demonologists" that she was okay, so that may have been a show of pride. She eventually gains her justice because there is an exorcism at the end and the spirit is driven out of her.   This is a theater in Greece. It seems to be pretty well preserved. It is outside and a circular shape and I'm pretty sure I've read before that it's shaped like that so it can project the voices.

Western Civ 6/1 - letter to my future self

I will try to make this as least corny as I can possibly make it, since this type of thing usually is a little corny. I hope you are alive and well, we would not want to die young. Currently, in 2020, there are quite a few things happening. We are in a global pandemic with the virus Covid-19, and there is rioting and looting across the U.S. due to the Black Lives Matter movement. Coronavirus has us out of school and doing online assignments, businesses have been closed for the past 2 months and are just now opening back up (the mall still isn’t open  ). Christiana mall in Delaware was supposed to open today (June 1, 2020) but now is delayed because they don’t want to get looted like another Delaware mall. I spent multiple hours last night watching the rioting, and from what I saw and what was broadcasted on the news this morning, the cops are the reason they become violent.
